Some recipes

Awsomely healthy skillet potato veggetable side dish

discovered through divine inspiration at the supermarket- lots of natural food, minimal preperation:

Potatos
Onions
Green peppers
Sage
Other veggies available

  • Cube the potatoes, rinse them off, and toss them in the electric Wok.
  • Let the potatoes cook for a while- they take longest, use olive oil or spray
  • slice some onion and green peppers and toss them in
  • Add seasoning

What's it been, a week? Almost a week?

My philosophy to this point has been simple: don't eat any junk. If/ when I am hungry I choose something good for me. We went on a shopping spree, the cabinets are full of health food, and there should be no excuse for raiding Christian's snack drawer, binging on cookies and chips, or anything like that.

Fruit smoothies, trail mix, walnuts, apples, oatmeat, carrots, prunes, yogurt, water, peanut butter and honey sandwiches on whole weat bread, tuna fish, and healthy dinners with plenty of vegetables like corn, beans, and broccoli.

That's what I do. If I crave sweet or salty I satisfy it with some healthy non-processed food. For a while I felt hungry all the time, but I just kept eating foods on the list. I was worried that I was still eating a ton of calories and that I wouldn't see any weight loss...

Well, now I am seeing a pretty dramatic decrease in appatite. I feel full/ satisfied most of the time. When meal time rolls around I'm not that hungry. I don't feel compelled to find something to eat. I still eat regularly, several small meals (though sometimes I try to "fill up" when I am around healthy food and know I won't be back for a while, like at work) and there have been occassional indulgences like cookies at Transpo and Pizza (veggie pizza) the other day for dinner, but on the whole I am eating much better then I have before. I am also eating bigger meals in the morning and less at night.

People talk about how your body will go through a period of adjustment when you radically change your diet, and once you are on the other side you will be used to eating the healthier food and your body will respond accordingly. It hasn't been long enough to say for sure- I tend to go through phases of being more and less hungry anyway, but maybe I am getting healthier. I guess time will tell.

Bringing Healthy Back

IN: A no-starve diet of health-boosting foods.
Leafy salads. Mangoes. Lemon water. Nutty, Grainy cereals. Green tea.

5 MINUTES AGO: detox fasting. diet soda. hot chocolate.

OUT: Betting high-calorie sinful desserts at ND games.
Cozy holiday foods. Egg nog. Light Twinkies. Crunch Berries. Irish coffee.

For some reason the smell of the 62 degree air today gave me a boost of pep. It made me feel a haunting sensation of being on vacation. Perhaps it was the combination of the fresh air smell, getting out early and having breakfast at Uptown with my dad. I always eat better on vacations then come home a few pounds lighter and try to keep up whatever vacation diet I fell into. I remember a few years ago, it was the "Vegas diet" where I ate loads of melon, peanut butter granola bars, loads of water and a sensible dinner.

New blog

Well, the holidays, aging, and a sedentary lifestyle have pushed my weight beyond the exceptable limits. Everyone is planning on eating healthier, but most important is that I don't fall apart any more then I already have. In this blog, we record recipes and other nutrition and healthy eating information culled from books, internet, magazines, and personal experience. Hopefully, we can cobble together a good list of what works and what doesn't, what tastes good and what doesn't, and we can, in the end, have our own diet resource just a mouse click away the next time we are bored, hungry, and eying the Christmas Cakes or considering a the lazy instant gratification of $5 pizzas.

ok, let the fun begin.
